A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is the highest academic degree awarded by universities in most of the countries. PhDs are awarded for programs across the whole breadth of academic fields. Eligibility
For doing the PhD, you should have a Master Degree with 55% marks. Moreover, in India, some high class institutions allow the candidates to do research even after the bachelor degree.
Where to apply?
You can apply anywhere in the world. In India, there are four types of universities State universities, Central Universities, Private Universities and Deemed Universities. For applying to the State University and Central University, it is recommended to have JRF/ NET Qualified. Otherwise, it seems to be difficult to take admission in these type of universities. However, if you have research experience in the past, then there is no need to clear NET. Without NET/ JRF, you can easily do your PhD in private or deemed universities. In these universities, you need to pay some semester fees.
PhD Admission Process.
First you have to fill the application form for a university where you want to do your research. After filling the form, you have to appear for the university’s entrance exam followed by an interview. The interview is conducted by RDC (Research Degree Committee) where you have to share your research topic.
Almost every university takes candidates for the PhD admission twice a year. You can get all this information from respective university’s website.
Whether you will get Monthly Stipend?
It depends on your background whether you are JRF or NET qualified? If you are JRF, you will be provided more than Rupees 30000/- per month. If you are only NET, it can be around 10000/-. And if you are neither JRF Nor NET, still you can get stipend by working on a research project. The research project is provided by the government agencies.
What is the Duration of the PhD?
The duration of PhD including course work is from the 3 years to 6 years. The duration of course work is of 6 months. In course work you are supposed to go through about the research process. At the end of this course work, the university conducts an exam which verifies whether you are ready to do the research. It is important to pass this exam. However, the candidate having M.Phill degree is exempted from the course work. After the course work you will be allotted a supervisor with whom have to work on your synopsis. It might take a year for completing your synopsis. After completing the synopsis, you have to work on your thesis. Now it depends on you how much time you embark on your thesis.
