PhD admission with four year Graduation degree

Recently, In April 2024, UGC has released a notification which has covered the following important points:

  • UGC NET can be used as an entrance test for Ph.D. admission in place of entrance tests conducted by the different universities for admission to Ph.D.
  • Candidates with a four-year graduation degree can now directly appear for NET and go for a PhD.

UGC NET for PhD admission/appointment as Assistant Professor

UGC-NET is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for

  1. the ‘award of Junior Research Fellowship (admission to Ph.D.) and appointment as Assistant Professor’,
  2. ‘appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.’, and
  3. ‘admission to Ph.D. only’ in Indian universities and colleges.

Candidates who are in their last year of a four-year Bachelor’s Degree Program may also apply for UGC NET. However, these candidates should have a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent.

The eligibility will be determined in the following manner:

  • The JRF-qualified candidates are admitted into the Ph.D. programme based on an interview as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of Ph.D. Degree) Regulations, 2022.
  • UGC NET under category-2 category-3 can be used as an entrance test for Ph.D. admission in place of entrance tests conducted by the different universities/HEIs for admission to Ph.D.
  • For candidates qualified under Category 2 and Category 3, the marks obtained in the NET will have 70% weightage and 30% weightage will be based on the performance in the interview/viva voce conducted by the University/HEI concerned.

PhD admission with four-year Graduation degree – Eligibility

UGC has said that candidates with a four-year graduation degree can pursue PhD in any discipline. Earlier, a Master’s was required as a basic eligibility to pursue a PhD.

The candidate seeking for PhD admission with a four-year graduation degree must have qualified UGC NET in the subject in which they want to pursue a Ph.D.

Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF will be eligible to receive a fellowship of UGC under various schemes.
