UGC has written many rules and regulations in its UGC Ph.D. regulations, 2022 related to the Eligibility criteria to be a Research Supervisor, CoSupervisor, Number of Ph.D. scholars permissible per Supervisor, etc.
Eligibility criteria to be a Research Supervisor
According to UGC, Any regular Professor/Associate Professor of the University/ College, with at least five
research publications in peer-reviewed or refereed journals after obtaining a Ph.D. and any regular Assistant Professor of the university/ college with a minimum of five years of teaching/research experience with a Ph.D. degree and at least three research publications in peer-reviewed or refereed journals may be recognized as Research Supervisor.
Number of Ph.D. scholars permissible per Supervisor
A Research Supervisor/Co-Supervisor who is a Professor cannot guide more than eight (8) Ph.D. scholars at any given point in time. An Associate Professor as Research Supervisor can guide up to a maximum of six (6) Ph.D. scholars (including co-supervision) and an Assistant Professor as Research Supervisor can guide up to a maximum of four (4) Ph.D. scholars.

Question regarding Guideship
1. if a phd guide transfer in other colleges in same university their Guideship will continue or not
2. If a phd guide leave or dismissed in his job ,what about his Guideship( speciality seen in private university)

1. Yes, in most cases, the guideship is continued. However, it ultimately depends on the university’s PhD regulations.
2. In such cases, the university typically appoints another eligible faculty member as the new PhD guide for the scholar.
3. The university assigns a new supervisor to the scholar.
