The Hans Bockler Foundation (HBS) is inviting applications from doctoral candidates for its International PhD Scholarship programmes.
This scholarship allows international PhD scholars to combine their doctoral research with a research stay in Germany at a university or research institute.
The HBS Foundation supports doctoral candidates who show academic excellence, social responsibility, and interest in democratic values. Interested candidates have to apply online before 28 February 2026.

This foundation offers two types of Scholarships:
- Dieter Schumacher International PhD Scholarship
- Ute and György Széll International PhD Scholarship
1. Dieter Schumacher International PhD Scholarship
The Dieter Schumacher International PhD Scholarship supports outstanding international doctoral candidates in Economics who wish to conduct research in Germany.

- Labor markets
- Income distribution
- Financial markets
- Employee-oriented economic research
Eligibility
- Candidates pursuing a PhD in Economics
- Below 30 years of age
- Strong academic record
- Social, political, or cultural engagement

12 or 24 months
Financial Support
Monthly stipend: EUR 1,550
Annual travel allowance: EUR 1,400
2. Ute and György Széll International PhD Scholarship
The Ute and György Széll International PhD Scholarship supports candidates pursuing a PhD in the social sciences and Humanities.
Eligibility
- Enrolled in a PhD programme in Social Sciences or Humanities
- No age limit
- Academic excellence
- Strong social, political, or cultural engagement
- Interest in the foundation’s values
Duration
6 months
Financial Support
- Monthly stipend: EUR 1,450
- Annual travel allowance: EUR 1,300
