The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has officially invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) from eligible Indian researchers and institutions to conduct high-impact research using ICMR-INDIAB Study Biobank samples.
Indian researchers/institutions who wish to address biomedical, clinical, translational, or public health questions can apply online by 16 March 2026.
This opportunity enables researchers to access biobanks related to diabetes and metabolic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Projects should be aligned with diabetes, metabolic disorders, and NCD research.
About the ICMR-INDIAB Study Biobank
The ICMR-INDIAB (India Diabetes) Project is a nationwide, cross-sectional study that covers adults aged 20 years and above across 31 States and Union Territories.
The study provides crucial data on:
- Diabetes and pre-diabetes
- Hypertension
- Obesity
- Dyslipidemia

Two ways to access INDIAB Biobank Samples
Option 1: Access to Samples Without ICMR Funding (Preferred)
This is the primary and preferred modality.
Key requirements:
- Applicants must have their own funding, infrastructure, and laboratory facilities
- ICMR will provide biological samples only
EoI must include:
- Investigator details and affiliations
- Research rationale and objectives
- Brief methodology
- Expected outcomes
- Source of funding
- Type, volume, and number of biosamples required
- Scientific justification for sample use
Shortlisted applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.
Option 2: Access to Samples With Limited ICMR Funding (Exceptional Cases)
In exceptional cases, researchers may request limited financial support from ICMR.
Funding support is restricted to Manpower, Consumables, and Operational expenses.
Applications under this option must be submitted through existing ICMR Extramural Grant Calls:

- Complete the PI profile and institutional details
- For Option 1: Navigate to: Proposal submission EoI ‘Add new EoI proposal’
- For Option 2: Submit the proposal under the relevant Call as mentioned above
- Fill the EoI form step-by-step and upload all relevant documents.
