Research Areas and Scientific Themes
NCPOR invites research proposals across seven major scientific themes.
1. Atmospheric Sciences
Research areas include trace gases, atmospheric aerosols, clouds and precipitation, boundary layer meteorology, atmospheric composition, pollution monitoring, atmospheric electric field measurements, lightning studies, and middle and upper atmospheric studies.
2. Space Science, Astronomy and Astrophysics
Proposals may focus on space science studies, astronomy, and astrophysics.
3. Oceanography
Research areas include Arctic fjord dynamics, hydrography, biogeochemical studies, ocean–atmosphere–sea ice interactions, and land–sea–atmosphere interactions.
4. Environmental Sciences
Topics include contaminant distribution, local and long-range pollutants, pollutant transport and sources, emerging contaminants, marine microplastics, marine litter, persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and heavy metals.
5. Geosciences
Research may focus on past climate studies and structural geology.
6. Cryospheric Studies
Areas of interest include remote sensing, snow and ice chemistry, glacier mass balance and dynamics, snow layer evolution, glacier biogeochemistry, and microbial dynamics.
7. Biological Sciences
Research topics include marine organism diversity, animal adaptation, vegetation succession, plant–microbe interactions, nutrient fluxes, and permafrost studies.
NCPOR will give priority to novel, long-term scientific programmes that advance knowledge of the Arctic region and strengthen India’s scientific capabilities in polar research.
