The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has invited investigator-initiated research proposals under the First in the World Challenge Grants 2026.
The initiative aims to support innovative research ideas that have the potential to create breakthrough biomedical and health technologies.
The First in the World Challenge encourages researchers to pursue ideas that have never been thought of, tested, or tried anywhere in the world.
Types of Projects and Funding
Researchers can apply according to the current stage of their innovation.

Who Can Apply?
The proposals can be initiated by an individual or by a team of researchers (either from a single institute or multiple institutes).
A Principal Investigator will lead each team.
Eligible applicants include Scientists and faculty working in Indian-recognized institutes.

Selection Process
The selection process includes:
- Confirmation that the proposal represents a First in the World concept.
- Shortlisting based on relevance and potential impact.
- Final discussion and decision by the selection committee.
How to Apply?
Applicants should follow these steps on the ICMR e-PMS portal:
- Complete the mandatory PI profile.
- Select Proposal Submission.
- Click Apply Proposal.
- Select “First in the World Challenge, ICMR” from the call/advertisement dropdown.
- Click Apply New Proposal.
- Complete the application form section by section.
- Ensure that all mandatory sections and required information are properly completed.
- Submit the proposal before the deadline.
