NIDM Call for Proposals for PhD Fellowships, Research Projects and Best Thesis Awards

The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has announced a major Call for Research Proposals 2026.

Researchers, PhD scholars, faculty members, and institutions working in disaster management can now apply under three major research initiatives. The last date to submit applications is 31 August 2026.

NIDM is inviting applications under the following categories:

  • NIDM Doctoral Fellowship on Disaster Studies
  • Research Project/Study on Disaster Management: Innovation & Action Research
  • Best PhD Thesis Ranking in Disaster Studies

1. NIDM Doctoral Fellowship on Disaster Studies

The fellowship is open to full-time PhD scholars enrolled in UGC-recognized universities and who have completed their coursework.

Applicants can submit proposals in areas including Landslides, Floods, Cyclones, Earthquakes, Fire, etc;

Selected scholars will receive:

SRF Fellowship₹42,000 per month + HRA
Contingency Grant₹10,000 per year (JRF), ₹20,500 per year (SRF)
PwD Assistance₹2,000 per month

2. Innovation & Action Research Projects

NIDM is also inviting research project proposals from scientists, engineers, faculty members, and researchers working in recognized academic and research institutions.

Major Research Themes

The call covers several high-priority disaster management topics, including:

  • Disaster insurance and risk financing
  • Himalayan landslides
  • Earthquake risk assessment
  • Floods and river management
  • Coastal hazards and cyclones
  • Forest fire early warning systems
  • AI and GIS for disaster management
  • Mental health during disasters
  • Early warning systems
  • CBRN hazards
  • Disaster mitigation strategies

Selected projects can receive funding up to ₹8 lakh for a project duration of 1–2 years

3. Best PhD Thesis Ranking in Disaster Studies

NIDM has also launched the Best PhD Thesis Ranking to recognize outstanding doctoral research.

The Theme for 2026–27 is Earthquake: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery.

Applicants must have completed their PhD within the last two years and have at least two research papers related to their thesis published in high-impact national or international journals.
