Asia in the World Fellowship Programme 2027–2028: Fully Funded IIAS Fellowship

The International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS) has opened applications for the Asia in the World Fellowship Programme 2027–2028.

This unique nine-month fellowship combines research, international collaboration, and cultural exchange through residencies in two different countries. Selected fellows will spend three months at a partner institution in Asia, Africa, Europe, or Latin America, followed by six months at IIAS at Leiden University in the Netherlands.

Applications are open from 1 July 2026 to 10 September 2026.

Fellowship Structure

The fellowship lasts 9 months and consists of two phases.

During the first phase, fellows will stay at one of the partner institutions located in different parts of the world. The second phase takes place at IIAS, Leiden University, Netherlands.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must have a good command of the English language.

The programme offers three application categories.

Category A – Academic (Fully Funded)

Applicants must hold a PhD or complete their PhD defense by September 2026. This category receives full financial support.

Selected fellows under this category will receive a monthly stipend of €1,250 (gross) during the six-month stay in Leiden and a housing allowance of €1,200 per month. Further, a travel grant and Visa Support will also be offered.

Category B – Academic (Self-Funded)

Applicants must hold a PhD (or complete defense by September 2026). Further, they must have confirmed personal or external funding for the entire fellowship period

Category C – Independent Professionals (Self-Funded)

This category is open to Journalists, Writers, Diplomats, Policy makers, Curators, and Other experienced professionals.

Research Areas

Research proposals should examine Asia within broader global contexts. Projects may align with one or more IIAS thematic clusters, including:

  • Cities
  • Politics of Culture
  • Asia in the World
  • Humanities Across Borders
  • Knowledge Diplomacy in Action

Selection Process

The selection consists of two stages.

In the first Stage, Applicants submit an online application and required supporting documents.

In the second Stage, Shortlisted candidates will be invited to submit two reference letters and A short video presentation.
