The Mito Foundation, in partnership with the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF), has announced the 2026 Major Annual Grant Round.
These foundations are inviting researchers worldwide to submit proposals focused on primary mitochondrial disease (PMD) research.
The 2026 grant round offers up to US $500,000.
The 2026 grant round is built around two core objectives:
- Advancing research from laboratory discovery to clinical care
- Developing the next generation of mitochondrial disease researchers
Interested Researchers can apply online by 27 February 2026.
Scope and Priority Disease Areas
The primary focus is on primary mitochondrial disease.
While all PMDs are eligible, the following disease areas are of high interest in 2026:
- Disorders of mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis (including MEPAN syndrome)
- Single large-scale mitochondrial DNA deletions (e.g., Kearns–Sayre syndrome)
- Leigh syndrome and related disorders (including NARP)

Three funding mechanisms are available through this call: Graduate Student Award, Postdoctoral Fellowship Award, and Principal Investigator Award.
