The National Mission on Himalayan Studies (NMHS) has announced its 1st Call for Demand-Driven Action Research Projects 2026-27.
The NMHS invites research proposals focused on the sustainable development, conservation, and management of the Indian Himalayan Region (IHR).
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, supports the NMHS. The mission supports the preservation and enhancement of the ecological, natural, cultural and socio-economic assets of the Indian Himalayan Region.
Interested researchers can submit their proposals online by 31 August 2026.

Who Can Submit Proposals?
The call invites project proposals from professionals from reputable institutions, universities, or other recognized organizations.
Proposals should address one or more of the identified thrust areas under the NMHS Broad Thematic Areas (BTAs).
The proposed research should demonstrate:
- Scalability of the proposed intervention or solution
- Potential for community adoption
- Scope for policy integration
- Measurable outcomes
- Alignment with relevant national campaigns and development goals
- Consideration of gender equality and climate change as cross-cutting themes
NMHS 2026-27 Research Thrust Areas
The call identifies six major Broad Thematic Areas with specific research thrust areas:
- Water Resource Management (WRM)
- Biodiversity Conservation and Management (BCM)
- Physical Connectivity (PC)
- Livelihood Options and Employment Generation (LOEG)
- Skill Development and Capacity Building (SDCB)
- Handling of Waste (HW)
Documents Required for Proposal Submission
Interested professionals are required to submit the research proposal in the prescribed NMHS format for their area of expertise.
Researchers are also required to attach these documents with the proposal:
- Endorsement Certificate from the Head of the Institution
- Detailed biodata of the Principal Investigator (PI)
- Detailed biodata of the Co-Principal Investigators (Co-PIs)
