University of Toronto Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program 2026–2027

The University of Toronto is receiving applications for the Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program 2026–2027.

The Provost’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (PPFP) is a prestigious initiative at the University of Toronto aimed at supporting Indigenous and Black postdoctoral researchers.

The award provides up to $80,000 per year for up to two years, plus a $5,000 annual research stipend.

Eligibility

The award is open to Indigenous and/or Black researchers only, including both domestic and international candidates.

Nominees Must:

  • Have earned a PhD within the last five years and have not previously held a Provost’s Postdoc.
  • Demonstrate strong academic excellence
  • Show high research potential

Recipients Must:

  • Begin fellowship by January 2027 and engage as a postdoctoral employee of the University of Toronto
  • Register with the Postdoctoral Office (SGS)
  • Not hold another major fellowship simultaneously
  • Not hold a faculty position
  • Submit an Independent Development Plan (IDP) within three months
  • Provide proof of degree completion if pending at nomination

Selection Criteria

Nominations received by the School of Graduate Studies (SGS) will be evaluated based on the following selection criteria:

1. Research or Scholarship Proposal

  • Innovation and originality
  • Appropriate methodology
  • Alignment with career goals
  • Potential impact on the field

2. Applicant Track Record

  • Academic achievements and awards
  • Publications and scholarly activity
  • Research independence and originality
  • Mentorship and leadership experience

  • Leadership qualities
  • Research management ability
  • Collaborative skills
  • Career trajectory impact

4. Feasibility

  • Resource availability
  • Supervisor commitment
  • Infrastructure and funding support
  • Departmental leadership in the field

Application Process

Applicants cannot apply directly. They must be nominated by their Faculty (e.g., Arts and Science, Social Work) to SGS.

  • Contact a potential supervisor
  • Confirm Faculty internal deadlines
  • Work with the Faculty Research Office

Each Faculty may nominate up to three candidates per self-identification category.
