The International Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) is receiving applications for HFSP Research Grants – Award Year 2027. These highly prestigious grants support innovative research in life sciences through international and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Under the HFSPO–India partnership, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, encourages Indian researchers to apply.
Interested researchers must initiate a Letter of Intent by 17 March 2026.
The HFSP promotes frontier, curiosity-driven basic research. HFSP projects are known for Bold ideas, Novelty, Interdisciplinary approaches, and international collaboration.

Scientific Scope
HFSP supports projects in basic research studying fundamental problems in the life sciences, including:
- Genes and molecules
- Cellular and intracellular networks
- Tissue and organ systems
- Whole organisms and cognition
- Populations and ecosystems
Eligibility
HFSP grants are team-based. Applications from individual researchers are not eligible. The HFSP research team may include 2 to 4 members. One member of the team is designated as the Principal Applicant, and the others are designated as Co-Applicants.
Each member must hold a PhD or equivalent.
Specific eligibility requirements
In addition to the above general requirements for all Research Grants, the following conditions apply specifically to each of the two grant categories:
1) Research Grants – Program (RG-Program)
This Research Grant program is designed to allow teams of independent researchers at any career stage to
develop new lines of research through new collaborations. Priority will be given to novel research projects
2) Research Grants – Early Career (RG-Early Career)
Designed specifically for early-career independent researchers:
- Within 5 years of the first independent position
- PhD obtained within the last 10 years
- The entire team must meet early-career criteria

- Simply saving the title page generates a 7-digit LoI ID
- Submit the complete Letter of Intent by 26 March 2026
- Shortlisted teams will be invited to submit Full Proposals
- Final awards shall be announced in March 2027
